Christmas Care, Caring for the lonely & homeless over Christmas

23 years of care in the community.

Robert Buckland MP

Christmas Care undertakes valuable and much-needed work in my South Swindon constituency every year. Without this charity, many homeless, lonely and vulnerable people would have nothing to eat, nowhere to stay and nobody to talk to over Christmas.

I am delighted to be supporting the charity and offering my assistance in raising money, securing donations and recruiting volunteers for this year’s project.

There is a particular challenge this year because of the increased costs of gas, electricity and insurance for the church hall used by the charity. If you can help in any way, I know they would be most grateful. I will be giving up a few hours of my time this year as a volunteer; if you can join me, I know they will be delighted.

I congratulate Patsy Maloney and his wonderful team for all the fantastic work they do, and wish them every success.

The Shelter is celebrating our 23nd anniversary, the venue is Queens Drive Methodist Church Hall, Park South, Swindon. We are open 24 hours from 2pm on Christmas Eve to 11am on the 28th December 2011 for tea, coffee and a friendly face available 24 hours a day.

The project depends entirely on the generosity of the general public, we need:

  • warm clothing
  • any footwear
  • bedding
  • towels
  • toiletries and food

(We are also seeking donations of stationery items, books, children's clothing and toys)

Food we require:

  • 12 large turkeys
  • Meat to make sandwiches
  • Bacon
  • Eggs
  • Sausages
  • Fish
  • Cheese
  • Soup
  • Beans
  • Tinned meat

Last year we served 500+ meals throughout the time we were open, serving 70 turkey dinners at Christmas Day Lunch.

The project depends entirely on voluntary donations to survive, as I am sure you are aware fund raising gets harder each year, for this reason I am approaching you for assistance and will be greatful for any donations you are able to give us.
Cheques should be made payable to Christmas Care, a receipt will be given for all donations.

The shelter is run by volunteers, we ask volunteers to work a 4 hour shift (7am to 11am and so on), the longest shift is 11pm to 7am, we require a shift leader on all shifts. We hold two volunteer meetings at Queens Drive Methodist Church Hall at:

  • 8pm Thursday 10th November
  • 8pm Wednesday 16th November

The Church hall will be open for donations:

  • Saturday 10th December 10am – 3.30pm
  • Wednesday 14th December 7pm – 9.30pm
  • Friday 16th December 7pm – 9.30pm
  • Saturday 17th December 10am – 3.30pm

The Pilgrim Centre in Regent Street will be open for donations of money, food and toiletries from 13th December 10am – 2pm.

please do not leave any items outside the church or hall entrance, leftover bedding and clothes are sent to countries that are in need. All leftover food is distributed to the Green Hut, Salvation Army, Breakfast Club etc.

If you work in an office, shop, factory please can you ask the people you know to donate any food, even one tin would help.
I am sorry but we cannot make house calls to collect, if you are passing the church please call in, we would be delighted to see you for a tea or coffee or a friendly chat.

The trustees of Christmas Care wish you all a happy Christmas and New Year.

Yours Sincerely

Mr Patsy Moloney - Chairman
